A poorly installed and maintained garage door is an accident waiting to happen. When you consider its size and weight, it has the potential to cause serious injury that may even result in death as has been the case in the past.
As such, it is essential that any new garage door you purchase is properly installed so as to prevent any future problems. This is because it is ultimately the person who fits the door that will be responsible should a problem occur so if you do not fully understand what you are doing always call an expert installer who will be able to carry out the work for you.
Having said that, most DIY installation can be pretty straightforward provided you are methodical about the work and more than anything else follow the manufacturer`s instructions. You would not believe how many people we have come across that fail to follow this simple advice and as a result come unstuck.
Automating Existing Doors
If you are automating a manually operated door, modern legislation dictates that the door and motor must have been tested together to show they are compatible. For this reason, always inform the supplier as to the intended application of the motor so you can be certain the correct one is specified.
Automating New Doors
Modern garage doors are available in an endless array of styles and designs however one of the safest and most secure is a roller garage door. In terms of safety, because this design is automated as standard you can take the hassle out of having to source the right motor for your chosen traditional design.
Single skin roller doors are fitted with a motor that features in built force limitation sensors that will stop the door should it come into contact with something or someone. As an added precaution, photo cells can be fitted to the opening.
Insulated roller garage doors must now be fitted with a bottom rail safety edge to comply with legislation. This sensor moves with the door and so provides total coverage of the opening during the opening and closing cycles. The instant something is detected, the motor will stop, auto reverse and stop again. Please do not purchase or rely on photo cells as the only means of protection as they do not offer total coverage and therefore leave you vulnerable to injury.
